When are Chimney Liners Required?
This has become a common question for fossil burning fuels that has a multi-part answer. But first, let's explain some facts. Water condensation and flue gas temperature are the main culprits when it comes to venting high efficiency gas and oil equipment and the need for liners. The constant heating and cooling of flue gases in a cold chimney creates an acidic condensation that destroys brick, mortar and terra cotta clay liners. The other fact is that a cold chimney does not draw very well and can cause venting and carbon monoxide problems. the solution is an aluminum or stainless steel liner.

Most factory built fireplaces are tested and listed as decorative heating appliances and will not withstand the abuse often heaped on their masonry counterparts. Regular yearly maintenance, cleaning at generally 1/8" buildup, and careful monitoring can assure a safe enjoyable system.
The 3 levels of Chimney Inspections
Level 1
Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service, under the same conditions, and with the continued use of the same appliance.
Level 2
Level 2 inspection is required when any changes are made to the system. Additionally, a Level 2 inspection is required upon the sale or transfer of a property or after an operation malfunction or external event that is likely to have caused damage to the chimney.
Level 3
A Level 3 inspection includes all the areas and items checked in a Level 1 and a Level 2 inspection, as well as the removal of certain components of the building or chimney where necessary.
Timely Chimney Inspections Can Save Lives
The National Fire Protection Association standard 211 advises that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.
